Early detection key to managing macular degeneration (Journal Gazette & Times-Courier)
The leading cause of loss of vision for persons age 65 and over is macular degeneration. This condition occurs from the wear and tear of the macula, the center part of the vision in the eye. Because macular degeneration does not usually affect the side vision, it does not cause total blindness.
